I don’t sell responsive design

6th Mar 2015 by Jason D Leave a Comment

For those of you who don’t know, a “responsive” website is one that will adapt to mobiles and tablets and generally look good across the plethora of devices that will be used to access your site.

The year is 2015, iPhones have been with us for 7 years. And all the other phone companies have been scrambling to catch/keep up since. You’d think 7 years is enough time for designers and developers and agencies to adjust, but apparently not.

I still see websites launched that are not “responsive”. And these sites were launched recently. One conversation I had with one of the proud owners of a non-responsive site told me the agency they went through offered the iPhone/iPad version of the site as an add-on, an add-on!!

The web these days is not tied to a desktop computer anymore. I’m sorry, but I just get a little riled up about this. How can you be offering websites these days without it looking good everywhere and only selling the ‘desktop’ version?

It doesn’t work that way anymore. Mobile browsing and searching is quickly becoming the dominant force. That’s why I don’t charge for responsive design, nor is it an add-on, it’s part and parcel of doing my job, ensuring your site looks good across multiple devices.

If ever you come across a developer or an agency who wants to treat ‘responsive’ design as an add-on, just turn the other way and continue your search. Or if you have any questions, you can email me and I will give you an honest, no-strings-attached answer.

Follow the money

Some people think they’re following the money, but in actuality their following the savings. Instead of investing $100 in a professional tool, they spend $10 on a lookalike. [Read more…] about Follow the money

How many of us are guilty of treating our website this way?

But the fact is, your website is sometimes not only the forgotten employee, it can also be your cheapest employee. [Read more…] about Your forgotten employee

A business for your website

An organised person once said, “A place for everything and everything in its place.”  This person obviously did not have any kids, but I otherwise like the saying. [Read more…] about A business for your website

Paper Fury

Though out of my specialty of business, this would fall in line as a love job. This site belongs to my sister-in-law who’s made a bit of a name for herself in the YA bool realm.

She does a lot of reviews and is image and gif heavy on the site, so we opted for more whitespace to allow the content to speak for itself.

I even went to so far as to design an animated header that only shows on the front page:

PaperFuryBanner

The things you do for love.

She also sells paper mobiles and paper things on Facebook & Etsy, and I tried convincing her to also sell via her website, but she wasn’t wanting to expand too much.

You can check her site our here:

Just Making Noise is a healthy foodie blogger who has also written an ebook of healthy ice cream recipes.

So I designed a page to easily navigate her recipes on the blog:

recipe page on just-making-noise.com

And for her ebook, I used the plugin Easy Digital Downloads to handle the ecommerce of selling the ebook.

YWAM Byron Bay is a not for profit mission training organisation. Here’s a glimpse of their previous site:

I’ve heard it said that not-for-profits are the hardest to work for because they need a site that does it all and yet they don’t have a budget. I still opted to work with YWAM Byron Bay and I’m proud of the results.

I was able to take their paper application process and bring that online, thus speeding up the process of getting students in the door.

I also integrate an eCommerce solution to allow students and staff to pay fees online and for YWAM Byron Bay themselves to take donations.
